My birthday is tomorrow and I’ll turn 44 and begin my 45th trip around the sun. As part of the annual event, I’ve been looking closely at…
…where I was. I know, I know. According to all the experts and even a bunch of not-so-experts, we shouldn’t live in the past. And that’s not what I’m doing with this. Instead, I’m trying to see with my own two eyes just how far I’ve come as a Christian, husband, father, employee, musician, friend. I want to see how far I’ve come with my goals in all the different facets of my life. I think this is important because it’s SO easy to caught up in the day to day currents of life that I might not realize how much I’ve grown. I think this step is important because it’s too easy to look at the goals I didn’t accomplish and begin to beat myself up for that. And this step gives me a chance to celebrate the things I DID accomplish.
…where I am. This goes hand in hand with the last step, but it also sets the stage for the next step. I’ve always heard how important it is know where you are in order to chart out the smart path to where you want to go. So, I’ve done quite a bit of “Where am I now?” type thinking and even as the next 7 days unfold, I’ll be taking actual objective measurements in several life areas so I can have a record of exactly where I am. This way, I’ll be able to see exactly where I started when I look back next year.
…where I want to be. Once I have a clue where I am, I take a good hard look at where I want to be at the end of the next year, in every area of life I can think of. Once I have an idea of what I want to accomplish over the course of the next year, I start to figure out where I want to be at the end of the first month. So, for example, if I wanted to release 60 pounds over the next year, I would want to be five pounds lighter at the end of the first month. Then at the end of the month, I can do a mini-version of these same steps and set the milestones for the next 30 days. And on and on it goes.
Maybe a similar process would work for you. OR…if YOU have a good process you follow, please share it with all of us.
By the way, if you’d like to follow me throughout my 45th year, I’ll be blogging it one day at a time at My 45th Year.
